The World Digital Library (WDL) is a project of the U.S. Library of Congress, with the support of UNESCO, and contributions from libraries, archives, museums, educational institutions, and international organizations worldwide. It was launched in 2009 with the goal of preserving and sharing cultural heritage materials from around the world. The WDL contains a wide variety of items, including books, manuscripts, maps, newspapers, journals, prints, photographs, sound recordings, and films. These materials are presented in their original languages, with more than 100 languages represented, including many lesser-known and endangered languages. The WDL’s partner institutions selected content based on its cultural and historical importance, with the aim of recognizing the achievements of all countries and cultures over a wide range of time periods. The project was proposed by the Librarian of Congress, James H. Billington, with the basic idea of creating an easily accessible collection of the world’s cultural riches to promote cross-cultural awareness and understanding.
