This course is for everyone from humanists,\n social scientists, to hardcore engineers.

What makes Code in Place special? We recruit and train one\n volunteer teacher for every 10 students in order to create a\n vibrant community of teaching and learning. We believe that the\n magnitude of people who want to teach computer science is large\n and may be roughly proportional to the magnitude of people who\n want to learn. Why? Past Offerings

We have hosted Code in Place five times, in 2020, 2021,\n 2023, 2024, and 2025. It was an inspiring experience. Tens of thousands students\n have been introduced to the wonderful world of programming in\n Python. Many new teachers had their first experience in front of\n students. Friendships were made across countries.

It was perhaps the single course with the largest number of\n teachers ever. Across four offerings we had over:

What did you like about Code in Place?
I loved how there was a clear schedule/structure from section times to assignment due dates. The due dates on the assignments and having a weekly \"in-person\" section that I wanted to be prepared for and be able to contribute to made it so much easier to hold myself accountable to watching the lectures as they came out (instead of procrastinating) and staying on top of the coursework. I also loved Ed - every single question I had was already a question asked on Ed - the fellow students and the assignment leaders were so supportive and helpful.

This is a great course taught by professors that are actually interested in teaching. You will be surprised by the organization of the course how it allows you to go between individual self-study and classroom based learning as well as how much you will learn in such a short period of time!

Who Can Teach?

Code in Place Section Leaders come from a wide range of backgrounds. We have had:

  • Retired teachers
  • Programmers in industry
  • University students studying computer science
  • and even past Code in Place students who have continued their learning
We have learned that folks from all contexts can be exceptional \n educators. The prerequisite is that you know the first half of \n CS106A (Python up through lists and dictionaries). If you are \n accepted we will train you on the art of computer science education.\n You need to have at least 2 hours each week over the 6 week period.

There are none! Well actually, you need to be able to turn on a\n computer. Or, honestly you probably only need to be able to recognize\n if a computer is on. It is helpful if you already know some basic\n arithmetic, e.g. what is multiplication?

The primary content is in English, and sections will be in English too.\n But there have been students in our course with a wide range of English \n background, from beginners to native speakers. We are very into \n internationalization and in the future hope to make Code in Place work \n in any language.

No. The main difference is that we are not massive, and our space is \n limited by availibility. Code in Place is a relatively different experience, \n involving live interactive teaching in small groups.

Our students are all over the world, so there's always someone\n learning in Code in Place. We'll have sections running at all hours\n between Wednesday and Friday, and you can sign up for whichever time\n best suits your schedule.
